Thank you so much for taking the time to see me about my sister this afternoon. It was a very valuable visit. I was impressed by the care you take to treat people as individuals, by the fun, positive and clearly caring attitude of the staff, and by the range of activities and occupational therapy you have going on. The new rooms are lovely and your plans for Hazelwell are very exciting.
You asked how it differs from other homes: it has much more of a ‘buzz’ than other places I have been to, because there is a wider range of different activities going on at the same time. You also care more about residents as individuals with a past history and personality. The lounges and dining rooms are more ‘intimate’, the bedrooms are lighter, brighter and more modern, and the lack of uniforms together with the other things makes the whole place feel more like home than like an institution. The signposting is fun as well as practical, and the animals bring another dimension to the home. One of my tests is whether I feel I could live there myself if I needed to, and Hazelwell would definitely pass the ‘yes test’ for that one! I took on board your comment about her age, but this seems to be a problem anywhere given her early onset dementia.
